Tips For Online Activities

St. Charles Parish School students recently took part in the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin Healthy Kids Challenge. About 20 percent of school families logged their childn's screen time over the course of a week to determine the length of time they were spending online.

As a follow up to the tracking exercise, Guidance Counselor Mrs. Delmore visited with students in 5K through 8th grade to talk about screen use. For the younger students, they brainstormed activities that they could engage in that do not require screens. They also talked about healthy choices such as exercise and limiting screen time to two hours a day.

Middle school students talked about the use of technology in their lives, appropriate behavior and safety online, their “digital footprint” and the potential future consequences for college acceptance and jobs based on their online history.

There has been an increasing amount of research published which shows the correlation between increased screen use (especially social media) and increased rates of anxiety and depression (in both teens and adults).
